Family main features
Nuclear receptor subfamily 1 group H members, commonly known as Liver X Receptors (LXRs), are pivotal regulators of lipid and cholesterol metabolism. LXRs include two isoforms, LXRα (NR1H3) and LXRβ (NR1H2). They function as ligand-activated transcription factors that modulate the expression of genes involved in lipid homeostasis, inflammation, and glucose metabolism. LXRs are primarily activated by oxysterols, which are oxidized derivatives of cholesterol, underscoring their role in maintaining cholesterol balance and preventing its accumulation in tissues.
