Family main features
Background
The ABCF subfamily is part of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily, which generally utilizes ATP hydrolysis to transport various molecules across cellular membranes. However, ABCF proteins are unique within the ABC superfamily because they lack transmembrane domains and are not involved in membrane transport. Instead, ABCF proteins play crucial roles in the regulation of translation and protein synthesis.. ABCF1 is a member of the GCN20 subfamily. Unlike other members of the superfamily, this protein lacks the transmembrane domains which are characteristic of most ABC transporters. ABCF1 may be regulated by tumor necrosis factor-alpha and play a role in enhancement of protein synthesis and the inflammation process. ABCF2 acts as a suppressor of the volume-sensitive outwardly rectifying Cl cannel (H+/Cl− exchange transporter 3)
Protein Structure
ABCF proteins are characterized by their structure, which includes:
