Family main features
SATB (Special AT-rich Sequence-Binding Protein) homeobox proteins are a family of chromatin organizers and transcription factors that play a crucial role in regulating gene expression by modulating the higher-order structure of chromatin. These proteins are characterized by their ability to bind to specialized AT-rich DNA sequences, which are often located in the matrix attachment regions (MARs) of the genome. SATB proteins function as a scaffold, tethering these regions to the nuclear matrix and creating loops of chromatin that facilitate or hinder the access of transcriptional machinery to specific genes.
