Background

MME, also known as neprilysin (NEP) or CD10, is a zinc-dependent metalloprotease enzyme that plays a critical role in various physiological processes, particularly through the degradation of small peptides. The 3D structure of neprilysin, as elucidated by X-ray crystallography, shows that it functions as a homodimer, with each monomer contributing to the overall catalytic activity.


Classification and Subtypes

MME/neprilysin belongs to the M13 family of zinc metallopeptidases, which includes enzymes that are zinc-dependent and involved in the degradation of bioactive peptides. This family also contains enzymes such as endothelin-converting enzyme (ECE) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), both of which are involved in regulating vascular tone and blood pressure.
