Descripción

MME, also known as neprilysin (NEP) or CD10, is a zinc-dependent metalloprotease enzyme that plays a critical role in various physiological processes, particularly through the degradation of small peptides. Neprilysin is most commonly found on the cell surfaces of various tissues, including the kidneys, lungs, intestines, and the central nervous system. Its primary function involves regulating the levels of biologically active peptides by catalyzing their breakdown, thus influencing many biological systems, including cardiovascular and renal function, pain sensation, and immune responses. Neprilysin is particularly significant in the context of cardiovascular diseases, especially in the metabolism of natriuretic peptides such as atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), both of which play crucial roles in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance. It also degrades neuropeptides like substance P and bradykinin, as well as amyloid-beta peptides in the brain, thus connecting neprilysin to pathologies such as hypertension, heart failure, and Alzheimer's disease.
