Description

RNA-binding protein that plays a role in the regulation of alternative splicing and influences mRNA splice site selection and exon inclusion. May play a role as a negative regulator of cell growth. Inhibits cell proliferation. Involved in splice site selection of vascular endothelial growth factor. Induces an increased concentration-dependent incorporation of exon in CD44 pre-mRNA by direct binding to purine-rich exonic enhancer. RNA-binding abilities are down-regulated by tyrosine kinase PTK6. Involved in post-transcriptional regulation of HIV-1 gene expression.

Background

KHDRBS3, also known as T-STAR (testis-signal transduction and activation of RNA), is a member of the Sam68 family of KH-domain RNA-binding proteins. It regulates alternative splicing, RNA transport, and translation, linking RNA processing to cellular signaling pathways. KHDRBS3 is highly expressed in the testis and brain, where it regulates spermatogenesis, synaptic plasticity, and germ cell development. It interacts with signaling proteins, including tyrosine kinases, and is involved in cell cycle control, meiosis, and differentiation. Dysregulation of KHDRBS3 is associated with infertility and neurological disorders due to defects in RNA metabolism and cellular differentiation. Knockout studies show impaired germ cell development and reduced neuronal plasticity, highlighting its critical role in tissue-specific gene expression and RNA regulation.
