Description
The product of this gene belongs to the family of G-protein coupled receptors. This family has several receptor subtypes with different pharmacological selectivity, which overlaps in some cases, for various adenosine and uridine nucleotides. This receptor is responsive to both adenosine and uridine nucleotides. It may participate in control of the cell cycle of endometrial carcinoma cells. Three transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified for this gene.

Background
P2RY2 is a G protein-coupled receptor activated by ATP and UTP, serving as a key regulator of cellular responses to extracellular nucleotides. It is widely expressed in epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and immune cells, where it couples to Gq proteins, activating phospholipase C (PLC), increasing intracellular calcium, and modulating cytoskeletal dynamics and ion transport. P2RY2 plays a critical role in regulating inflammation, wound healing, and fluid secretion. In the respiratory tract, P2RY2 mediates mucus secretion and airway hydration, making it a therapeutic target for cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In addition, P2RY2 is involved in vascular remodeling, angiogenesis, and immune cell recruitment during tissue repair and inflammation. Dysregulation of P2RY2 contributes to inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular dysfunction, and fibrosis. P2RY2 agonists and antagonists are being explored for their potential in treating respiratory disorders, wound healing, and chronic inflammatory conditions.
