Descripción
Prostaglandin E Synthase 2 (PTGES2) is an enzyme involved in prostaglandin biosynthesis specifically converting prostaglandin H2 (PGH2) to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) which is a critical lipid mediator in inflammation fever and pain responses PTGES2 is localized in the cytoplasm and functionally distinct from its microsomal counterpart (mPGES-1) It is constitutively expressed in various tissues and its activity is regulated by cellular stimuli such as cytokines or stress signals PTGES2-derived PGE2 plays a role in modulating immune responses and tissue homeostasis Dysregulation of PTGES2 expression has been implicated in chronic inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease as well as cancer progression due to PGE2’s role in tumorigenesis and immune evasion PTGES2 is also linked to reproductive functions and fever response through its regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis

The protein encoded by this gene is a membrane-associated prostaglandin E synthase, which catalyzes the conversion of prostaglandin H2 to prostaglandin E2. This protein also has been shown to activate the transcription regulated by a gamma-interferon-activated transcription element (GATE). Multiple transcript variants have been found for this gene.
