Background

ACER1 is a ceramidase enzyme that hydrolyzes ceramides into sphingosine and free fatty acids, functioning optimally in alkaline pH conditions. It is primarily localized to the endoplasmic reticulum and is highly expressed in keratinocytes, where it plays a vital role in epidermal differentiation, the formation of the skin barrier, and the regulation of water retention. By modulating ceramide and sphingosine levels, ACER1 influences sphingolipid metabolism and participates in cellular processes such as apoptosis, stress responses, and proliferation.
