Cytoplasmic FMR1 interacting protein 1 (CYFIP1) is a key protein that interacts with the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) and plays an important role in modulating actin cytoskeleton dynamics and synaptic function CYFIP1 is a component of the WAVE complex, which regulates the branching of actin filaments, a process that is essential for cellular movement and the formation of protrusions such as lamellipodia and filopodia In neurons, CYFIP1 is crucial for dendritic spine formation, synaptic plasticity, and the maintenance of synaptic strength, which are vital for processes like learning, memory, and neural network development Disruption in CYFIP1 expression or function is implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders, including fragile X syndrome, where defects in synaptic function and neuronal communication contribute to cognitive deficits, developmental delays, and social impairments CYFIP1 has also been associated with cancer, as alterations in its regulation can influence cell motility, invasion, and metastasis Through its role in both the nervous system and cancer progression, CYFIP1 represents a potential target for therapies designed to treat neurological disorders and limit the spread of cancer by controlling cellular movement and actin dynamics
