Descripción
CELSR1 encodes the Cadherin EGF LAG seven-pass G-type receptor 1, a member of the adhesion GPCR (G-protein coupled receptor) family. CELSR1 is integral to the non-canonical Wnt/planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway, which regulates tissue polarity and cell orientation during development. It is expressed widely in developing tissues, particularly in the nervous system, skin, and vascular endothelium. CELSR1 plays a significant role in processes like neural tube closure, ensuring proper spinal cord formation. Mutations in CELSR1 are associated with neural tube defects such as spina bifida and craniorachischisis, conditions caused by the failure of the neural tube to close. In addition to its developmental role, CELSR1 is involved in angiogenesis, where it supports endothelial cell alignment during blood vessel formation. CELSR1's extracellular domains contain cadherin repeats, which mediate cell-cell adhesion, and EGF-like domains that influence cell signaling. Dysregulation of CELSR1 has been implicated in cancer metastasis, where it contributes to the loss of cell polarity and enhanced cell migration. CELSR1 is therefore of interest for its roles in embryonic development, wound healing, and disease pathogenesis, particularly in oncology and developmental biology.
