Descripción
Butyrophilin like 8 (BTNL8) is a member of the butyrophilin-like family within the immunoglobulin superfamily, primarily expressed in epithelial tissues where it is believed to play a role in immune regulation. This protein shares structural similarities with other butyrophilins known to regulate γδ T cell activation, which is critical for maintaining tissue homeostasis and surveillance against infections and malignancies. BTNL8 is thought to contribute to modulating immune responses at barrier sites, including the skin and mucosal surfaces, where it may interact with local immune cells. Emerging studies suggest that BTNL8 could influence inflammation and autoimmune pathways, though its specific interactions and molecular mechanisms remain under investigation. Its potential involvement in maintaining epithelial integrity and modulating immune responses makes it an area of interest for research into inflammatory disorders and epithelial cancers.
