Description

Sequence-specific DNA-binding protein that interacts with inducible viral and cellular enhancer elements to regulate transcription of selected genes. AP-2 factors bind to the consensus sequence 5'-GCCNNNGGC-3' and activate genes involved in a large spectrum of important biological functions including proper eye, face, body wall, limb and neural tube development. They also suppress a number of genes including MCAM/MUC18, C/EBP alpha and MYC. Involved in the MTA1-mediated epigenetic regulation of ESR1 expression in breast cancer.

Descripción

TFAP2C, another member of the AP-2 family, regulates the transcription of genes involved in embryogenesis, cell proliferation, and epithelial cell differentiation. It is critical for early embryonic development, including trophoblast differentiation, placental development, and mammary gland morphogenesis. TFAP2C acts as a key regulator of estrogen receptor (ER)-mediated signaling in breast cancer, where it promotes tumor cell growth, survival, and metastasis. TFAP2C also regulates epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), contributing to cancer progression and metastatic dissemination. Its expression is elevated in breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers, where it serves as both a prognostic marker and therapeutic target. Knockout studies reveal impaired placental development, defective cell differentiation, and embryonic lethality, emphasizing TFAP2C's role in regulating cell lineage commitment, hormone signaling, and cancer progression.
