Agmatinase (AGMAT) is a mitochondrial enzyme involved in polyamine biosynthesis, catalyzing the conversion of agmatine into putrescine, a precursor for spermidine and spermine. These polyamines are crucial for cellular growth, DNA stabilization, protein translation, and stress adaptation. AGMAT is expressed in diverse tissues, including the brain, liver, and kidney, and it plays a central role in regulating neuronal health, liver detoxification, and cellular stress responses.
