Descripción
ACSM2A is a medium-chain acyl-CoA synthetase that activates fatty acids, particularly those with 4 to 12 carbon chain lengths, enabling their use in β-oxidation and lipid biosynthesis. Expressed predominantly in the liver and kidneys, ACSM2A is involved in metabolizing medium-chain fatty acids derived from dietary intake or endogenous lipid breakdown. It plays a critical role in energy production, particularly during metabolic states requiring rapid mobilization of energy sources, such as fasting or physical exertion. ACSM2A also participates in the detoxification of fatty acid derivatives and xenobiotics, contributing to overall metabolic homeostasis. Dysregulation of ACSM2A has been implicated in metabolic disorders and kidney function abnormalities, where impaired medium-chain fatty acid metabolism affects energy balance and organ function. Its enzymatic role emphasizes its importance in metabolic adaptability and lipid utilization.
