Descripción
AKAP14 is a testis-specific anchoring protein that plays a pivotal role in sperm function by organizing PKA signaling pathways essential for spermatogenesis and sperm motility. AKAP14 localizes to the sperm flagellum, where it anchors PKA and other signaling enzymes, coordinating cAMP-dependent processes that regulate flagellar beat and capacitation. It interacts with proteins in the axoneme structure, ensuring proper assembly and maintenance of sperm tail components necessary for motility. Loss or mutations in AKAP14 disrupt PKA signaling, leading to reduced sperm motility and infertility. AKAP14 also facilitates ATP generation by organizing signaling complexes near mitochondria in the sperm midpiece, ensuring energy supply for flagellar movement. Studies suggest that AKAP14's role in cytoskeletal anchoring makes it a critical factor in maintaining sperm structure and function, linking it to male fertility and reproductive success.
