Descripción

HTR5A is a G protein-coupled serotonin receptor predominantly found in the central nervous system, where it modulates serotonin's effects on neuronal excitability and synaptic signaling. HTR5A is expressed in regions like the hippocampus, cortex, and hypothalamus, and it is involved in regulating functions such as learning, memory consolidation, and mood stabilization. The receptor couples to G proteins, inhibiting adenylate cyclase activity and thereby reducing intracellular cAMP levels. Studies have shown that HTR5A plays a role in mood regulation, with dysregulation linked to depression, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric disorders. Additionally, HTR5A modulates circadian rhythms and sleep patterns, suggesting its involvement in sleep regulation. Genetic variations in the HTR5A gene have been associated with altered serotonergic signaling, influencing individual susceptibility to mood disorders and response to serotonergic therapies. Although HTR5A remains less characterized compared to other serotonin receptors, it continues to be a target for developing treatments for neurological diseases, sleep disturbances, and affective disorders, highlighting its importance in serotonin-mediated signaling pathways.
