Descripción
TAAR1 is a G protein-coupled receptor that is activated by trace amines, a group of biogenic amines including putrescine, phenylethylamine, and tryptamine, which are present in low concentrations in the brain and peripheral tissues. TAAR1 is predominantly expressed in the central nervous system, particularly in areas involved in mood regulation, cognition, and neuroendocrine function. Upon activation, TAAR1 couples to Gi and Gs proteins, modulating dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate signaling. This receptor plays a role in modulating neurotransmitter release and influencing brain functions such as reward, arousal, and emotional behavior. TAAR1 is implicated in psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, depression, and drug addiction due to its influence on dopaminergic and serotonergic systems. Therapeutic targeting of TAAR1 is being explored for treating disorders like schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease, as well as for modulating the effects of stimulant drugs and improving cognitive function.
