Descripción
Synemin (SYNM) is a protein that plays a key role in maintaining the structural integrity of cells, particularly in muscle and neuronal tissues SYNM is involved in linking the intermediate filaments of the cytoskeleton to other cell structures such as the plasma membrane and actin filaments, contributing to the maintenance of cell shape and mechanical strength In muscle cells, synemin is particularly important for the structural organization of the sarcomere, the basic contractile unit of muscle fibers It also plays a role in cellular signaling and the regulation of growth and differentiation Synemin has been linked to diseases involving defects in the cytoskeleton, such as muscular dystrophies, where its dysfunction leads to impaired cell stability and muscle weakness Additionally, synemin is involved in the regulation of synaptic function and neuronal signaling, highlighting its importance in both muscle and nerve cell health Understanding synemin’s role in cell function and its association with muscle and neurological diseases provides potential insights into therapies for these conditions

Type-VI intermediate filament(IF) which plays an important cytoskeletal role within the muscle cell cytoskeleton. It forms heteropolymeric IFs with desmin and/or vimentin, and via its interaction with cytoskeletal proteins alpha-dystrobrevin, dystrophin, talin-1, utrophin and vinculin, is able to link these heteropolymeric IFs to adherens-type junctions, such as to the costameres, neuromuscular junctions, and myotendinous junctions within striated muscle cells.
