Background

AK6, also known as GTP:AMP phosphotransferase, is a mitochondrial matrix enzyme primarily responsible for transferring phosphate groups between nucleotide molecules, such as GTP and AMP. AK6 plays a critical role in mitochondrial nucleotide homeostasis, facilitating ADP and ATP regeneration to sustain oxidative phosphorylation. Unlike cytosolic AK isoforms, AK6's GTP preference highlights its importance in maintaining mitochondrial energy pools.
