Descripción
Taste Receptor Type 2 Member 136 (TAS2R136) is an integral receptor within the TAS2R family that mediates the perception of bitter flavors. Situated in the taste buds, TAS2R136 interacts with bitter compounds, initiating a protective sensory response to avoid the ingestion of potentially toxic substances. Upon activation, this receptor engages the gustducin pathway, promoting calcium ion release and transmitting bitterness signals to the brain. Like other TAS2R members, TAS2R136 is also expressed in extra-oral tissues, where it may play roles in innate immune defense and cellular signaling in response to environmental challenges. Variations in the TAS2R136 gene are associated with individual differences in taste perception, dietary behaviors, and health risks related to food intake and metabolism. This receptor’s importance extends beyond taste perception to broader physiological processes, highlighting its multifaceted role in human health.
