SET nuclear proto-oncogene is a gene that encodes a protein involved in regulating gene expression and chromatin remodeling SET is implicated in various cellular processes, including cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis SET has been identified as a proto-oncogene, as its overexpression or misregulation contributes to tumorigenesis and cancer progression The SET protein interacts with other transcriptional and chromatin-modifying factors to regulate the structure of chromatin and gene transcription, playing a role in maintaining cellular homeostasis SET dysregulation is associated with several cancers, including leukemia and solid tumors, where its abnormal activity contributes to uncontrolled cell proliferation, survival, and metastasis SET is also involved in modulating stress responses and DNA repair, making it a key player in maintaining genomic stability and cellular integrity Its function in both normal cellular development and disease progression highlights its potential as a therapeutic target in cancer

This inhibition is most likely accomplished by masking histone lysines from being acetylated, and the consequence is to silence HAT-dependent transcription.
