PZP alpha-2-macroglobulin like (PZP) is a protein that shares structural similarities with alpha-2-macroglobulin, a major inhibitor of proteases in the blood, and functions in regulating immune responses and tissue repair PZP is involved in inhibiting a wide range of proteases, including those involved in inflammation and coagulation, thereby preventing tissue damage caused by excessive protease activity It is expressed in various tissues, including the liver and brain, and has been shown to modulate immune cell activation and inflammatory processes PZP’s role in protease inhibition also extends to its involvement in preventing excessive tissue degradation during injury and infection, contributing to wound healing and tissue remodeling Dysregulation of PZP expression has been linked to inflammatory diseases, including autoimmune conditions, where its altered levels can exacerbate inflammation and tissue damage Furthermore, PZP has been implicated in cancer, where it may influence tumor progression by regulating protease activity within the tumor microenvironment Studies suggest that PZP may also have neuroprotective effects, particularly in diseases like Alzheimer’s, where it modulates protease activity in the brain to reduce neuronal damage
