Background

Pregnancy Associated Glycoprotein 1 (PAG1) belongs to a family of aspartic proteinases expressed by the placental trophoblasts in ruminant species. PAG1 is secreted into maternal circulation during pregnancy and serves as a marker of placental function and fetal well-being. It plays a role in modulating immune tolerance during pregnancy by potentially interacting with maternal immune cells to prevent rejection of the fetal allograft. PAG1 has been widely studied in veterinary medicine as a non-invasive biomarker for early pregnancy detection in cattle, sheep, and other ruminants. Its expression profile and stability in circulation make it a useful tool in reproductive management.
