Descripción
Neuronal Growth Regulator 1 (NEGR1) is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored protein that plays a critical role in brain development, particularly in processes involving cell adhesion, synapse formation, and neuronal connectivity. It is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and is predominantly expressed in the central nervous system. NEGR1 contributes to neuronal growth and synaptic plasticity, influencing cognitive functions such as learning and memory. It is also implicated in regulating neuronal migration and axon guidance during development. Variants or altered expression of NEGR1 have been associated with neuropsychiatric conditions, including autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, and depression, underlining its importance in maintaining normal brain function. As a potential biomarker and therapeutic target, NEGR1 continues to be a focus of research in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disease studies.
