Background

DS cell adhesion molecule like 1 (DSCAML1) DSCAML1, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, is a transmembrane protein that shares structural and functional similarity with DS cell adhesion molecule (DSCAM). It plays a vital role in neural development, particularly in axon guidance, dendritic self-avoidance, and synapse formation. DSCAML1 is involved in ensuring proper neuronal wiring by mediating selective cell-cell adhesion through homophilic binding, which is critical for preventing overlapping dendrites of the same neuron. It is highly expressed in the developing central nervous system, particularly in regions such as the retina and olfactory bulb. Mutations in DSCAML1 have been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, including epilepsy, underscoring its role in maintaining neural circuit stability. The protein consists of multiple immunoglobulin-like and fibronectin domains, enabling diverse interactions that support cellular connectivity and signaling.
