Descripción
A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase Domain 1 (ADAM1) is a member of the ADAM family of proteins, characterized by their roles in cell adhesion, migration, and proteolysis. ADAM1 is primarily expressed in the testis and is involved in sperm-egg interactions during fertilization. It is localized to the surface of spermatozoa and is essential for sperm binding to the zona pellucida of the oocyte. ADAM1 contains multiple domains, including a metalloproteinase domain, which is responsible for proteolytic activity, and a disintegrin domain, involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Dysregulation of ADAM1 expression or function may impact male fertility and reproductive health. Research into ADAM1's molecular mechanisms and interactions is ongoing, with potential implications for contraceptive development and fertility treatments.
