Background

ALDOC is a brain-specific isoform of fructose-bisphosphate aldolase that catalyzes the same glycolytic reaction as ALDOA and ALDOB, converting fructose-1,6-bisphosphate into glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate. ALDOC is highly expressed in the central nervous system (CNS), particularly in astrocytes and Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, where it plays a key role in brain energy metabolism and glucose utilization. Altered expression or mutations in ALDOC are linked to neurodegenerative disorders and gliomas, where energy metabolism is disrupted.
