Descripción
Microfibril-Associated Protein 3 (MFAP3) is a member of the microfibril-associated protein (MFAP) family, which are integral components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and are involved in the assembly and stabilization of microfibrils. These microfibrils are primarily composed of fibrillin and provide critical structural support to connective tissues. MFAP3 interacts with fibrillin-1 and other ECM components to contribute to tissue integrity and elasticity. MFAP3 is characterized by regions rich in cysteine residues, which allow for the formation of disulfide bonds, crucial for stabilizing microfibril structure. MFAP3 is expressed in various tissues, particularly those with significant elastic properties, such as the lung, skin, vasculature, and ligaments. MFAP3 is believed to play a role in microfibril organization and elastogenesis—the process by which elastic fibers are formed and maintained. These fibers are essential for the elasticity and resilience of tissues subjected to repetitive mechanical stress.
