Descripción

LRIT3 shares structural similarities with LRIT1, including its LRR and Ig-like domains, and plays a critical role in the proper functioning of retinal bipolar cells. LRIT3 is expressed specifically in the retina, where it is essential for the transmission of visual signals from photoreceptors to downstream neurons. Mutations in the LRIT3 gene are associated with autosomal recessive complete congenital stationary night blindness (cCSNB), which is characterized by impaired visual signal transmission despite normal photoreceptor activity. LRIT3 functions as a scaffold for synaptic proteins, ensuring proper synaptic architecture and signal fidelity within the retina. Its involvement in modulating postsynaptic responses underscores its significance in visual sensory processing.
