Descripción

LRRC26 is a leucine-rich repeat-containing protein that functions as a regulatory subunit of large-conductance calcium-activated potassium (BK) channels, modulating their gating properties and activity. LRRC26 enhances BK channel sensitivity to calcium, allowing activation at lower intracellular calcium concentrations and contributing to processes like membrane potential regulation, ion homeostasis, and smooth muscle relaxation. It is predominantly expressed in tissues such as salivary glands, prostate, and immune cells, where it regulates fluid secretion, smooth muscle tone, and immune cell activation. LRRC26 also plays a role in modulating cell proliferation and survival, particularly in tumor cells, where it promotes BK channel activity to support cell cycle progression and growth. Dysregulation of LRRC26 has been linked to cancer progression, particularly in prostate and breast cancer, where it enhances potassium efflux and supports cell proliferation and migration. Functional studies reveal its importance in fine-tuning BK channel activity, maintaining ionic balance, and regulating cellular excitability under physiological and pathological conditions.
