Descripción
Integrin Subunit Alpha M (ITGAM), also known as CD11b, is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed predominantly on the surface of monocytes, macrophages, granulocytes, and some dendritic cells. ITGAM forms a heterodimer with integrin beta-2 (ITGB2) to create the Mac-1 complex, which is crucial in mediating adhesion and migration of leukocytes during inflammatory and immune responses. The protein plays a pivotal role in immune surveillance and host defense by facilitating phagocytosis, complement receptor activity, and migration across endothelial barriers. Additionally, ITGAM is involved in the recognition and clearance of pathogens and apoptotic cells. Aberrations in ITGAM expression or mutations have been linked to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other autoimmune disorders. It is also a key player in immune evasion mechanisms employed by certain pathogens.
