Background

TMED6 is a member of the p24 protein family, which regulates protein trafficking between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the ER-Golgi intermediate compartment (ERGIC), and the Golgi apparatus. TMED6 functions as a cargo receptor, facilitating the selection and packaging of secretory and membrane proteins into COPII-coated vesicles for ER export. It also participates in the retrieval of misfolded or redundant proteins back to the ER through COPI-mediated transport. TMED6 plays a role in maintaining proper protein quality control, ensuring efficient maturation and trafficking of proteins critical for cellular homeostasis. It is highly expressed in secretory tissues and immune cells, where it supports organelle organization, immune response modulation, and cellular communication.
