Background

TAAR6 is another member of the trace amine-associated receptor family, activated by biogenic amines such as tryptamine and phenylethylamine. It is primarily expressed in the brain, including the olfactory system, and plays a role in modulating neurotransmitter release and influencing sensory perception. TAAR6, like other members of the TAAR family, couples to Gi proteins, leading to a reduction in cAMP levels and influencing the activity of various intracellular signaling pathways. Although its precise physiological role is not fully understood, TAAR6 is believed to be involved in the regulation of mood and the modulation of sensory processing. Dysregulation of TAAR6 signaling has been linked to neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression and schizophrenia, making it a potential target for drug development in mood disorders and sensory dysfunction. Studies of TAAR6 may reveal more about its potential to modulate mental health conditions and sensory responses.
