Soluble Cluster of Differentiation 14 (sCD14) is a crucial glycoprotein primarily expressed on the surface of monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils, as well as existing in a soluble form (sCD14) in circulation. This molecule acts as a co-receptor for the detection of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS), a component of Gram-negative bacterial cell walls, in conjunction with Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and MD-2. CD14 is pivotal in innate immunity, where it aids in the recognition of pathogens and triggers immune responses. Soluble CD14 is particularly significant in tissues and cells lacking membrane-bound CD14, enabling a broader immune response. Dysregulation of CD14 levels is linked to various inflammatory and infectious diseases, including sepsis, atherosclerosis, and autoimmune conditions. As a biomarker, soluble CD14 is used in research and clinical diagnostics to assess inflammation and immune activation. It plays an essential role in understanding host-pathogen interactions and inflammatory pathways.
