Descripción

ALKBH6 is an α-KG- and Fe(II)-dependent dioxygenase whose precise biochemical and functional roles remain less defined compared to other ALKB family members. Preliminary evidence suggests that ALKBH6 may play a role in DNA and RNA repair, particularly in counteracting methylation damage caused by environmental alkylating agents. It is expressed in multiple tissues, including the liver, kidneys, and brain, where it is thought to contribute to cellular responses to genotoxic and oxidative stress. ALKBH6 may also participate in regulating cellular metabolism by linking α-KG availability to nucleic acid repair pathways. Its dysregulation has been associated with cellular stress and metabolic imbalances, suggesting a broader role in maintaining genomic integrity and energy homeostasis. Further studies are ongoing to elucidate its specific substrates and functional importance in health and disease.
