LRRC38 is a regulatory protein primarily expressed in smooth and skeletal muscle tissues where it acts as an auxiliary subunit of large-conductance calcium-activated potassium (BK) channels it modulates the sensitivity of BK channels to calcium and voltage facilitating their role in maintaining cellular excitability and muscle function its activity is essential for processes such as smooth muscle contraction and neuronal signaling as it influences the gating properties of potassium channels studies suggest that LRRC38 plays a role in regulating blood pressure through its effects on vascular tone and in modulating neurotransmitter release in the nervous system emerging evidence links dysregulation of LRRC38 to conditions like hypertension and muscular dystrophy further research is exploring its potential as a therapeutic target for disorders associated with abnormal BK channel function and calcium signaling
