Background

Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) are a diverse group of molecules formed through the non-enzymatic reaction of reducing sugars with proteins, lipids, or nucleic acids in a process called glycation. AGEs accumulate under conditions of oxidative stress and hyperglycemia, particularly in diseases like diabetes mellitus, where they are formed in excess. They are commonly found in long-lived proteins such as collagen and elastin, contributing to tissue stiffness and organ dysfunction. AGEs can crosslink proteins, disrupt cellular signaling, and impair extracellular matrix structure. They are also known to interact with specific receptors, such as the AGE receptor (AGER), activating inflammatory and oxidative pathways that lead to chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, and neurodegeneration.
