Descripción
HTR6 is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that specifically binds to serotonin (5-HT), activating adenylate cyclase to increase cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels within the cell. This receptor is predominantly expressed in the central nervous system (CNS), particularly in the striatum, cortex, and hippocampus, regions associated with cognition, mood regulation, and motor control. HTR6 plays a critical role in modulating cholinergic signaling, promoting the release of acetylcholine, and enhancing neuronal excitability, which makes it essential for learning and memory processes. Dysregulation of HTR6 has been implicated in several neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and cognitive decline. As such, HTR6 is a target for drug development aimed at improving cognitive function and treating mood disorders. Recent research highlights the receptor’s potential involvement in obesity and metabolic regulation, given its expression in hypothalamic neurons responsible for energy homeostasis. Pharmacological modulation of HTR6 with selective antagonists or agonists holds promise for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive impairments, showcasing its importance in neurological and metabolic health.
