Background

HTR3D is a lesser-known subunit of the 5-HT3 receptor family, which functions as a ligand-gated ion channel. HTR3D assembles with the HTR3A subunit to form functional receptor complexes but does not form channels independently. Its co-expression with HTR3A influences the conductance, ion permeability, and pharmacological characteristics of the receptor.
