Descripción
HTR3D is a lesser-known subunit of the 5-HT3 receptor family, which functions as a ligand-gated ion channel. HTR3D assembles with the HTR3A subunit to form functional receptor complexes but does not form channels independently. Its co-expression with HTR3A influences the conductance, ion permeability, and pharmacological characteristics of the receptor. HTR3D is primarily expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, particularly in the enteric nervous system, where it modulates serotonin-mediated functions such as nausea, vomiting, and bowel motility. Its role in pain processing and visceral hypersensitivity has made it an emerging target for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders. Genetic polymorphisms in the HTR3D gene have been associated with altered responses to 5-HT3 receptor antagonists, indicating its importance in personalizing therapies for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) and other serotonin-related disorders. Further research into HTR3D's function and interactions may reveal its broader contributions to neurotransmission and pharmacological modulation.
