Descripción
Hemicentin 1 (HMCN1) is a large extracellular matrix protein that belongs to the fibulin family and is characterized by its multiple immunoglobulin (Ig)-like and epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domains. It is primarily involved in the maintenance of tissue architecture and cell adhesion processes. HMCN1 is widely expressed in tissues such as the eyes, skin, and kidneys, where it contributes to basement membrane stability and the organization of extracellular structures. Mutations in the HMCN1 gene have been associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), suggesting a critical role in retinal integrity and function. In addition, HMCN1 is implicated in cancer biology, where its dysregulation has been linked to altered tumor microenvironments and metastatic potential. The protein’s interactions with integrins and other ECM components underline its importance in cell signaling and tissue homeostasis, making it a significant focus in studies on tissue repair, fibrosis, and oncogenesis.
