Description

The product of this gene catalyzes an important energy-yielding step in carbohydrate metabolism, the reversible oxidative phosphorylation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate in the presence of inorganic phosphate and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). The enzyme exists as a tetramer of identical chains. Many pseudogenes similar to this locus are present in the human genome.

Descripción

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) is a multifunctional enzyme predominantly involved in glycolysis, catalyzing the oxidative phosphorylation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate using NAD+ as a cofactor. Beyond its metabolic role, GAPDH participates in various non-metabolic processes, including transcriptional regulation, DNA repair, and cell apoptosis. Its involvement in oxidative stress response and as a target for S-nitrosylation connects it to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Furthermore, GAPDH can translocate to the nucleus under stress conditions, influencing apoptotic pathways.
