Background

Gamma-glutamyltransferase 6 (GGT6) is a member of the gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) enzyme family involved in glutathione metabolism and cellular redox homeostasis GGT6 catalyzes the cleavage and transfer of gamma-glutamyl groups from glutathione to acceptor molecules, contributing to amino acid transport, detoxification, and antioxidant defense pathways GGT6 is primarily expressed in the kidney, liver, and reproductive tissues, where it regulates extracellular glutathione turnover and supports cellular stress responses Dysregulation of GGT6 expression has been associated with various diseases, including liver dysfunction, inflammatory disorders, and cancer, where altered glutathione metabolism promotes oxidative stress and tumor progression Studies also indicate a potential role for GGT6 in maintaining immune system function by regulating glutathione availability in immune cells While the exact physiological roles of GGT6 remain under investigation, emerging evidence suggests its importance in cellular detoxification, redox balance, and protection against oxidative damage
