Descripción

Glucosaminyl (N-acetyl) transferase 7 (GCNT7) is a member of the glycosyltransferase family involved in the synthesis of branched O-glycans, which regulate glycoprotein structure and function GCNT7’s enzymatic activity is critical for forming complex glycan structures that mediate cell-cell communication, adhesion, and immune responses It is primarily expressed in specific epithelial tissues, although its functional roles are still being explored Studies suggest GCNT7 participates in epithelial barrier maintenance and mucin production, which are essential for protecting mucosal surfaces from pathogens Dysregulation of GCNT7 has been associated with certain cancers, where its altered activity disrupts normal glycosylation, contributing to tumor growth, invasion, and immune evasion Additionally, GCNT7 may play a role in embryonic development and cellular differentiation by modulating glycoprotein biosynthesis Emerging evidence indicates its relevance in glycan-mediated signaling pathways and potential as a target for studying epithelial and cancer biology
