Background

GABBR1 is a subunit of the metabotropic GABA-B receptor, a G protein-coupled receptor that mediates the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. GABBR1 forms an obligate heterodimer with GABBR2 to function effectively, and it couples to Gi/o proteins, inhibiting adenylate cyclase activity and reducing intracellular cAMP levels. This inhibition leads to decreased neurotransmitter release, regulation of synaptic transmission, and neuronal excitability. GABBR1 is widely expressed in the brain, particularly in regions involved in cognition, pain perception, and behavior.
