Descripción

FFAR2, also known as GPR43, is a G protein-coupled receptor that binds short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like acetate, propionate, and butyrate, which are produced by gut microbiota fermentation of dietary fiber. FFAR2 is expressed in immune cells, adipocytes, and the gastrointestinal tract, where it regulates energy metabolism, inflammation, and gut homeostasis. In immune cells, FFAR2 activation reduces inflammation by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokine production and promoting anti-inflammatory responses, making it a critical modulator of immune function. In adipose tissue, FFAR2 signaling regulates lipolysis, adipogenesis, and energy expenditure, contributing to metabolic health. Dysregulation of FFAR2 has been implicated in obesity, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and metabolic disorders. It also plays a role in the gut-brain axis, influencing satiety and feeding behaviors. FFAR2 is a potential therapeutic target for inflammatory diseases, obesity, and metabolic dysfunction, as it links gut microbiota activity to host metabolism and immune regulation.
