Descripción
E2F5 is a transcriptional repressor that functions similarly to E2F4 in controlling cell cycle exit, quiescence, and differentiation. It forms complexes with pocket proteins such as p130 and p107 to repress proliferation-related genes, particularly during G0 and early G1 phases. E2F5 is highly expressed in non-proliferative and terminally differentiated cells, where it ensures proper tissue development and homeostasis. E2F5 plays a critical role in embryonic development, especially in the formation of the central nervous system, lungs, and cardiac tissues. Mutations in E2F5 have been linked to ciliopathies such as hydrocephalus, where impaired regulation of cilia-related genes disrupts fluid flow and tissue organization. Knockout studies reveal developmental defects, including hydrocephalus and improper cell cycle control, demonstrating E2F5’s importance in maintaining cellular quiescence, differentiation, and developmental stability.
