Background
ADAM21 (A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase domain-containing protein 21) is a member of the ADAM (A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase) family. This family is involved in various biological processes such as cell adhesion, migration, proteolysis, and signaling. ADAM proteins are characterized by their multidomain structure, which includes a metalloproteinase domain responsible for proteolytic activity, a disintegrin domain involved in cell adhesion and signaling, a cysteine-rich domain, an EGF-like domain, a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic tail. ADAM21, specifically, is believed to play a role in fertilization. Studies have suggested its presence in sperm cells and involvement in sperm-egg interactions during fertilization. However, compared to other members of the ADAM family, relatively less is known about ADAM21, and further research is needed to fully understand its functions and mechanisms of action.
