Descripción

AGBL5 functions as a tubulin deglutamylase, removing polyglutamate chains from the tails of microtubules to regulate their dynamics and functionality. It is predominantly expressed in the nervous system but is also present in other tissues, where it plays a role in axon development, neuronal signaling, and intracellular transport mechanisms. AGBL5 activity is essential for proper mitotic spindle formation, ensuring accurate chromosome segregation during cell division. Dysregulation of AGBL5 has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, due to the accumulation of hyperglutamylated tubulin that disrupts axonal transport. It has also been implicated in cancer progression, where alterations in microtubule dynamics can enhance cell motility and invasive potential. Further studies are ongoing to elucidate its broader physiological and pathological roles.
