Descripción
ABCB8 is a mitochondrial ATP-binding cassette transporter involved in the export of iron-sulfur cluster intermediates and possibly other substrates from mitochondria to the cytosol. This function is critical for maintaining cellular iron homeostasis, facilitating the proper assembly of iron-sulfur cluster-containing proteins, and regulating oxidative stress. ABCB8 is highly expressed in metabolically active tissues, such as the heart, skeletal muscle, and liver, where mitochondrial function is crucial. Dysregulation of ABCB8 can lead to mitochondrial iron overload, contributing to oxidative damage and cellular dysfunction, particularly in cardiomyocytes. Emerging evidence suggests that ABCB8 plays a protective role in maintaining mitochondrial integrity under stress conditions, making it an important factor in cardiovascular health and mitochondrial-related diseases.
